Ensuring that you name your Top Menus and Categories appropriately is important for your SEO health. The administration software provides you with four different opportunities to alter the way you are naming your Top Menu or Category. The URL, two different Anchor Texts and a nice juicy header to help tell the search engines and your customers what the page and link are all about can all be configured by you.

Let’s take a peek at the Category Panel in the Admin section:

Category Admin Panel and the Title Field

A Category with the Title of ‘Dog T Shirts’ Gets converts into a URL and part of the Title tag for your page. The URL would look like this:

URL used for your Category

Next up are your Displayed Names. Your three options are Displayed Title, Content Title and Breadcrumb title. The following screenshot is the Category Administration panel and the three options:

Category Names in the Admin Panel

The Displayed Title is used for the Menus. You want to keep it short and sweet. Here is the resulting menu item:

Your Menu Item

This last example shows your Breadcrumb Title (another great anchor text) and your Content Title which is used as a Header 2.

Category breadcrumbs and content

As you can see, one Category has four ways in which you can increase your SEO and use great keywords. Not sure what keywords you should be using? Well, I use a handy firefox plugin called SEO Blogger from Wordtracker. It’s free and works great. You can get the SEO Blogger at Wordtracker.
